Our “Get to Know Cape Horn” program is in many ways, the best choice to experience the area in the richest possible way. The program includes a full-day sailing trip to Wulaia, as well as an over flight of Cape Horn. The program is completed by a choice of day-treks and half-day horse rides, all this crowned by the Lodge’s Chef best menu choices. You can access this program from Punta Arenas, Chile, and/or from Ushuaia, Argentina. In the text below you’ll find a day to day schedule, a description of the activities and the cost of the program.

Day 01 (Tuesday)
Flight from Punta Arenas (or crossing from Ushuaia) & over flight of Cape Horn (time to be confirmed. Regularly at around noon). Arrival at Lodge. Lunch at Lodge.
Choice of outdoor activity in the afternoon.
Interpretative talk with local history specialist.
Dinner at Lodge

Day 02 (Wednesday)
Full Day sailing trip to Wulaia Cove
“After an early breakfast, we transport guests to Puerto Navarino (1 ½ hours) where they board the Schooner S.V. Victory. Once everyone is on board, the all-wooden-made S.V. Victory heads west ands south across the Murray Channel, regularly accompanied by dolphins, penguins, sea lions and seals and the occasional whale, towards the historical hotspot of Wulaia. The sailing trip lasts between 7-8 hours. A short hike at Wulaia cove and an on-board “asado” (BBQ) lunch are contemplated during this day.” Dinner at Lodge (approx. 08:30pm)

Day 03 (Thursday)
Full day or half day activity of choice.
Lunch (at Lodge or on-terrain).
Dinner at Lodge.

Day 04 (Friday)
Half day activity of choice.
Departure from the lodge around noon.

Choice of Activities:

Trekking:
A choice of three of the best day hikes possible on the northern coast of Navarino Island.
1.Bandera: A short but steep hike through southern beech forests, to arrive at the flag on top of the hill, from where one can get some of the best views of the Beagle Channel. Length: 4 hours approx. (1/2 Day).
Physical demand: moderate-high.

2.Los Suecos: An extension of the “Bandera” hike. “Los Suecos” takes one further up, into sub-alpine and alpine environments from where, weather permitting, one can get one of the best all around panoramic views of Isla Navarino. From the Beagle Channel, to the whole Dientes Range and Windhond Bay, there are literally no limits (again, weather permitting) for splendid breathtaking sights.
Length: 6-8 hours approx. (Full Day)
Physical demand: Moderate-High.

3. Ukika: A hike up one of Isla Navarino´s most stunning valleys. Escalate terraces and beaver dams while enjoying some of the island’s wildest trails.
Length: 6-8 hours approx (Full Day)
Physical demand: Moderate-High

Horse rides:
The best Full Day horse ride the Beagle Channel has to offer.
Our horse rides aim to provide a mix of the best views the island has to offer, along with the experience of riding with local experts in the art of trail riding. All horse rides start with an introductory lecture for safety, followed by sorting of gear and horses. All rides include the assistance of a “Baqueano” (mountain horse man in Patagonia) as well as of a guide. All rides are with Chilean-style saddles and tack.

Los Bronces: A good ride which mixes both the best of mountain and coast. Alter a climb up native forests and bush, the trail turns to the West along the coast. A delicious, homemade picnic lunch to be had under the canopies of southern beech trees, for then visiting the Los Bronces cascade, a secret spot for locals. This is our main horse ride with the best of flora, fauna and history, together with the impressive sights of the Beagle Channel as background.
Length: 6+ hours (FDay)
Physical demand: medium-high

Special Interest Activities:

1. Visit to Omora Ethno-botanical Park:
Founded in 2000, the park is a perfect simple representation of the types of forest to be found at the Cape Horn region. Also, one can pay closer attention, and discover the little universe within each moss patch through the rightfully called “hand lens tourism”.

2. Visit to the Kipakar (House of the Women):
Yagan Hands. A first hand experience to hand-crafted goods made with materials such as southern beech bark, whale bones, and reed grass.

3. Visit to Museo Martín Gusinde:
The world’s southernmost museum; the Martín Gusinde Anthropological Museum was built in 1974 and founded in 1975. It owes its name to the Austrian priest Martin Gusinde S.V.D. (1886-1969), who lived among the Selknam and the Yagan between 1918 and 1924. The museum was recently expanded and opened by Chile’s first female president, Michelle Bachelet.

* = As an alternative, there’s the possibility to start this program on Monday. The over flight will continue to be operated on Tuesday meanwhile Monday would be used as one of the activity choice days.
** = Depending on group size (6+), air transportation can be arranged. Extra costs might be applied.

NOTES:
Chilean guests need to add the sales tax (IVA) to all prices and values given.
Given the significant differences in Light hours available throughout the year, we warn in advance on the possible necessity to change departure times and other times in the given Schedule. All changes made will be announces by the Lakutaia staff
The over flight of Cape Horn will be, if necessary, rescheduled if the climatic conditions would not allow it to go through on the scheduled day
Given that the flight from Punta Arenas, as well as the crossing from Ushuaia could be early in the morning or in the afternoon (depending on weather forecasts) we advise to be in Punta Arenas and/or Ushuaia the day before starting the program.
The same applies to getting out of the island. If taking connecting flights, be aware that there could be delays on the flight and/or crossing, therefore we advise to leave a reasonable time between arrival back from the island and your next flight.
Even though the program includes an English-speaking guide and interpreter, it can be arranged for a guide fluent in a different language than English to be available. The cost for this service will be an extra USD 100 per day (per group) of transportation and stay.
Even though the “Isla Navarino” does regularly boast good weather, this commonly includes strong winds and showers, therefore we strongly recommend to bring the following without distinction to what activity of choice will be preferred:

“The eleven essentials”
1. Backpack/Rucksack 25+ Liters
2. Hiking Boots (Preferable high-cut, water resistant or water proof)
3. Adequate clothing for the area’s climate (several layers)
4. Hiking/Trekking Parka or Jacket (characteristically lighter that a regular parka/jacket, besides being built with “breathable” fabric) to protect from wind and rain.
5. Adequate pants for hiking (convertible, light-weight, dries fast)
6. Gaiters
7. Sunscreen 30+ (spf)
8. Hat, baseball cap, or similar
9. Sun glasses
10. Gloves
11. Water container, bottle or similar
