Curicó is located 188 km south of Santiago and 114 km from Linares between the rivers Teno to the north and Claro to the south. Its population is around 180,000 and it was founded in 1743 with the name San José de Buena Vista de Curicó. It used to be located 5 km further north, but was relocated to its present position because of the dampness of the land.
A well-know occasion in the city is La Fiesta de la Vendimia (The Grape Harvest Festival), organized by the town council and the wine growers of the region, which takes place each year between 15 and 20 March. There is a fashion show, performances in the Plaza de Armas and the crowning of the Queen of the Grape Harvest. |
